What is IBS?

IBS Symptoms

IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is characterized by abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, or the combination of the two. Tenesmus, or the feeling of incomplete defecation, can also be a part of IBS. At other times, bloating and urgent trips to the restroom are typical. These symptoms can also be accompanied by excessive heartburn.

More seriously, Irritable Bowel Syndrome has been both the result and cause of psychological symptoms. It often can be a result of a stressful episode in the patient’s life. The stressful event could occur early on in life with IBS symptoms developing years later. It can also be a source of enormous amounts of stress and cause even more aggravated IBS episodes as time goes on.

Classifications By Symptom

IBS can be classified as being diarrhea predominant (IBS-D) or constipation predominant (IBS-C).
